| Glossary ======== `Aalameen: Mankind and jinn, universe.
Aameen: O' Allaah accept our invocation.
Al-Hajar Al- Aswad: The black stone placed at the corner beside the door of Ka`bah, in Makkah.
Al-Israa': Lit the journey by night; name of the 117th Soorah of the Quran, the night journey of the Prophet from Makkah to Jerusalem on 27th of Rajab before Hijrah.
Ar-Rijs: Evil deeds and sins.
Ar-Rujz: The idols.
As-Saabiroon: Sing. Saahir; The patient ones, people ready to bear all difficulties with patience for Islam.
As-Siddeeq: The truthful, a person answering the call of Islam spontaneously.
Ooqiyah: Pl. Awaaq; A measure of silver, equal to forty Dirhams or 123 gms. of silver.
Bay`ah: Pledge of allegiance.
Bay `ah Ar-Ridwaan: A pledge to fight to the last was taken by the Prophet under a tree at Hudaybiyah when a news reached that `Uthmaan (who was there to negotiate) is martyred in Makkah. Later the news proved to be false and he returned to the Prophet.
Birr: Righteousness, piety.
Da’wah: Preaching, preaching Islam.
Diyah: Blood money, i.e., compensation for homicide offered by the assassin to the survivors of the person killed in lieu of life for a life.
Eemaan: Faith, belief.
Fajr: Dawn, Dawn prayer, name of the 89th Soorah of the Quran.
Firdaws: The highest station in Paradise.
Fitnah: Tribulation, oppression.
Ghazwaah: Pl. Ghazwaat, Military expedition especially the one participated by the Prophet.
Hasan: Lit. Good; In Hadeeth terminology a prophetic Hadeeth with approved chain of transmitters but lesser than Saheeh.
Hijaab: Veil.
Hawdaj: A litter carried by a camel, a seat for two or more, usually with a canopy.
Ifk: Forged statement, lie.
Ihraam: Dress code for `Umrah and Hajj.
Illiyeen: A register wherein the good deeds of the pious and righteous people are recorded.
`Ishaa`: The Night prayer.
Ma`roof: Lit. Well known, generally accepted; All that which Islam ordains.
Mahr: Bridal money paid by the groom to his bride at the time of Nikaah — marriage contract.
Mahram: Being in a degree of consanguinity precluding marriage, a man whom a woman may never marry because of the degree of closeness of the blood- relationship, i.e., father, brother, son, uncle, father-in-law, etc. A woman is not required to veil in front of him.
Masad: Palm fiber, mentioned in 111th Soorah of the Quran.
Masaakeen: Sing. Miskeen; Poor, needy.
Mawla: Pl. Mawaalee; Lord, Master, Protector and also slave, freed slave, with whom a tie of mawld is established usually by having been slaves and then set free.
Mu'aththin: Caller to prayer.
Mudd: Pl. Amdaad or Midaad; a measure of volume, approximately a double-handed scoop.
Mujaahid: Pl. Mujaahideen; A fighter for the cause of Allaah.
Nawaafil: Sing. Nafl; Optional acts of worship like, prayer, fasting, etc.
Rak'ah: A unit in prayer.
Rooh: Pl. Arwaah; the soul, vital spirit.
Sadaqaat: Sing. Sadaqah; Alms in general and also Zakaah.
Saheeh: Authentic, a Hadeeth term used to denote the narration most authentic and acceptable.
Sakeenah: Tranquility, calmness, reassurance.
Salaam: Peace.
Sawm: Fasting, a pillar of Islam.
Seerah: Biography, generally Prophet's and his companions biography.
Shahaadah: Twin testimony of faith, i.e., there is no deity save and except Allaah and Muhammad is His messenger.
Soorah: Chapter of the Quran.
Takbeer: To say, `Allaahu Akbar' — `Allaah is All-Great'.
Tashahhud: Lit. To make Shahaadah; Sitting in the second and/ or the last Rak`ah — unit of prayer — after Sajdah — prostration — and reciting Tahaiyyaat.
Tawheed: Oneness of Allaah, Islamic monotheism.
`Umrah Al-Qadaa’: An `Umrah which could, for any reason, not be performed and is compensated. |
