Identification of the author Rahmatullah al-Hindi (1233-1308 A.H. = 1818 A.D.-1891 A.D.)
Muhammad Rahmatullah bin Khalil Al-Rahman Al-Kiranawi Al-Othmani (1) Al-Hindi Al-Hanafi, Visitor of the Two Holy Mosques: Researcher, scholar of religion and debate.
He was born in Kirana in India in 1818 AD, and he began his education in his town at the hands of his father and senior members of the family who were famous for their knowledge, virtue and religion according to the system followed in that era.
Then he traveled to Delhi to seek higher education, so he joined the school of Professor Muhammad Hayat, and lived in its building until he gained an abundance of science, then traveled to Lucknow, where he became a student of Mufti Saadullah Al-Muradabadi, and specialized in the literature of the Persian language at the hands of Sheikh Imam Bakhsh Al-Sahba’i Al-Dakhlawi, who was murdered.
In the year 1857, he also studied medicine at the hands of the accomplished doctor, Muhammad Fayd, and studied mathematical and engineering sciences, at the hands of the professor who had the theory (Lukartham) and the author of famous mathematical books.
And when his genius and excellence appeared in the legal sciences, he presided over the councils of lessons and fatwas, and when the students’ demand for his lessons increased, he established a legal school in Kiranah, from which great teachers, authors, and founders of schools throughout India graduated, but the increase in missionary influence in India (during the English occupation) preoccupied him from continuing teaching in He devoted himself to writing and responding to the missionaries, and he debated the priest Fender (pronounced Fender) in a public debate in which Sheikh Rahmatullah prevailed, so the British wanted to kill him, so he migrated to Mecca and settled there.
In Mecca, the sheikh met the imam and preacher of the Grand Mosque in his time (Sheikh Ahmed bin Zaini Dahlan), got to know him, then gave him a license to teach in the Grand Mosque and registered his name in the official register of the scholars of the Grand Mosque, and asked him to write about the issues of the debate that took place between him and (Fender), So he wrote that in his book (Manifesting the Truth).
And there -in Makkah- the sheikh established a religious school known and still is (the Soltian school).
The sheikh has many books, including: (Revealing the Truth), and it is one of the best books on its subject, and among them (Al-Tanbihiyat, fi proving the need for mission, gathering, and the meaqaat) and others.
Sheikh Rahmatullah Al-Hindi died in Makkah on the night of Friday, the 22nd of the blessed month of Ramadan in the year 1308 AH, and was buried in Al-Mu’alla (the cemetery of Makkah Al-Mukarramah), at the age of nearly seventy-five years, may God Almighty have mercy on him. _________ (1) His lineage ends at the thirty-fourth grandfather, to Dhul-Nurayn Othman bin Affan, may God be pleased with him.
