Surah Al-Balad
(The City of Makkah)
Chapter 90
It is 20 Verses 1 Unit (Ruku’): Revealed at Makkah
In the Name of Allah, the Most Compassionate, the Most Merciful
1. I (Allah) swear by this town (Makkah).
2. And you are free (from sin, to punish the enemies of Peace, Truth, and Justice on the day of the conquest) in this (sacred) city (of Makkah).
3. And I swear by a father (Abraham) and his son (Ishmael: the founders of Makkah and the Ka’ba).
4. Certainly We have created man to be in toil (labor and hardship).
5. Does he think that no one has power over him?
6. He says (boastfully): I have spent wealth in abundance.
7. Does he think that no one sees him?
8. Have We not made for him two eyes?
9. And a tongue and two lips?
10. And shown him the two ways (of good and bad)?
11. But he would not attempt the uphill Path?
12. And what will make you know what the uphill Path is?
13. (It is) the freeing of a slave (or a captive),
14. Or the feeding on a day of hunger,
15. Of an orphan near of kin,
16. Or to the poor (down) in the dust.
17. Then he is of those who believe (in Allah, His Angels, His Scriptures, His Messengers, the Last Day, and Predestination) and advise one another to have patience (consistency, and self-restraint) and advise one another to show (love, kindness and) mercy.
18. These are the people of the right hand.
19. And (as for) those who disbelieve in our Verses (this Qur’an), they are the people of the left hand.
20. On them shall be a Fire closed in (on all sides)
