| Coronavirus (COVID-19) Saturday، 07 March 2020 - 03:12 PM Coronavirus (COVID-19) SARS-CoV-2 is a new strain of virus in the coronavirus family that has not been previously identified. Coronaviruses are a large family of viruses that cause illness ranging from the common cold to more severe diseases such as Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) and Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS).
Novel coronavirus (COVID-19) was discovered in 2019 when a higher than normal number of people in Wuhan, China, started to get pneumonia after having an illness similar to the flu.
When doctors tested them, they found these people had a type of coronavirus they hadn’t seen before. There were already lots of types of coronavirus in the world, but this one was new.
The outbreak started in China in late 2019 and by March 2020 the disease has spread to countries around the world.
The names for the virus and the disease it causes have been announced by the World Health Organization and the International Committee on Taxonomy of Viruses.
The disease is called coronavirus disease. It is abbreviated as COVID-19.
On 29 December 2019, Chinese authorities identified a cluster of similar cases of pneumonia in the city of Wuhan in China.
These cases were soon determined to be caused by a novel coronavirus that was later named SARS-CoV-2.
Coronaviruses are a group of viruses that are common in humans and are responsible for up to 30% of common colds.
Two outbreaks of new diseases in recent history were also caused by coronaviruses – SARS in 2003 that resulted in around 1000 deaths and MERS in 2012 that resulted in 862 deaths.
Since then COVID-19 has spread to many more countries – cases have been reported in all world regions.
Symptoms and disease progression of COVID-19 The symptoms of the disease develop and change over time.
It seems to be common that symptoms start with a fever, followed by a dry cough.
After several days some patients experience shortness of breath. In severe and critical cases it can lead to severe pneumonia, respiratory failure, septic shock, multiple organ dysfunction and failure.
The incubation period, or the time between when people are infected and start showing symptoms, appears to be 2-14 days.
Because COVID-19 symptoms are similar to other illnesses like influenza, having these symptoms does not mean you have COVID-19.
How does novel coronavirus (COVID-19) spread and how can I catch it? Novel coronavirus (COVID-19) spreads between people, usually when a sick person coughs or sneezes.
You might catch novel coronavirus (COVID-19) if someone with the virus sneezes or coughs onto you. You could also catch the virus if they have coughed or sneezed onto a surface (like a door handle) that you touch, getting the droplets on your hands and then transferring them to your mouth, nose or eyes when you touch your face or eat.
How can I stop myself from getting it? Washing your hands often and properly means that you can prevent viruses from entering your body. That means washing your hands when you’ve been out and about and before you eat (and after you go to the toilet!). Source: https://www.sis.gov.eg/Story/144011/Coronavirus-(COVID-19)?lang=en-us |
