Depictions of Honouring the Children of Adam

Depictions of Honouring the Children of Adam 2Q==

Khutbah Topic
His Eminence Sheikh Faisal Ghazzawi
–May Allah protect him– delivered this Friday khutbah titled “Depictions of Honouring the Children of Adam” in which he talked about Allah’s honouring His servants. Giving some of the most prominent depictions of such honouring, he emphasised the necessity of thanking Allah ‒Exalted and Most High be He‒ for this great blessing.

Part One
Praise be to Allah, Possessor of Majesty, Honour, Abundance and Bestowal of Favours! I praise Him –May He be extolled– and bear witness that there is no deity save Allah alone with no associate. He is the Sovereign, the Pure, thePerfection. I also bear witness that our Prophet and Model, Muhammad, is His Servant and Messenger, the noblest of His creatures, the best of mankind, and the best in worshipping his Lord in the most perfect way possible.May Allah send His abundant Salat(Graces, Honours, Mercy), Peace and Blessing upon him, his Family and Companions!

Now then,
I exhort you –O servants of Allah– to show taqwa (fear) vis-à-vis Allah, to remember the favours and graces He bestowed upon you, to thank Him for his bounties and beneficence, and to be prepared for your appointed day so that you may succeed.

O Muslims!
In His Wise Revelation, our Lord, theMajestic, says:
And indeed We have honoured the Children of Adam, and We have carried them on land and sea, and have provided them with At-Taiyibât (lawful good things), and have preferred them above many of those whom We have created with a marked preference.[Al-Isra’: 70]

This sums up the bounties bestowed by Allah upon the Children of Adam as He has honoured them in every possible way.

The Arabic word‘ karramna’ means‘ We honoured them’ and we granted them distinction (over other creatures) and many good qualities. This is out of the Generosity of Allah –the Most Majestic– and His great Beneficence, as He honoured the Children of Adam in all possible ways.

The emphasis conveyed by the Arabic word‘ tafdheela’when He said: …and have preferred them above many of those whom We have createdwith a marked preferenceindicates the enormity of this ‘preference’ and that it is firmlyestablished.

O Muslims!
This noble verse shows that Almighty Allah has honoured the Children of Adam (all mankind) and exclusively bestowed upon them all aspects of honour, such as good stature and beautiful shape.

Allah –May He be exalted– says:
… and has given you shape and made your shapes good (looking)[Ghafer: 64]

He ‒Exalted and Most High be He‒ also says:

Verily, We created man of the best stature (mould)[Al-Teen: 4]

He ‒May He be glorified‒ also says:
Who created you, fashioned you perfectly, and gave you due proportion, In whatever form He willed, He put you together.[Al-Infitar: 7-8]

Among the aspects of the honour accorded to the Children of Adam arearticulated speech and discretion, understanding, andreason.

Allah, the Almighty, says:
Then, by the Lord of the heaven and the earth, it is the truth (i.e. what has been promised to you), just as it is the truth that you can speak.[Al-Dhariyat: 23]

He, the Almighty, also says:
so We made him hearer, seer.[Al-Insan: 2]

He ‒Exalted be He‒ again says:
Have We not made for him a pair of eyes? And a tongue and a pair of lips? And shown him the two ways (good and evil)?[Al-Balad: 8-10]

He ‒Highly praised be He‒ also says:
Say it is He Who has created you, and endowed you with hearing (ears), seeing (eyes), and hearts. Little thanks you give.[Al-Mulk: 23]

Also, among the aspects of honouring themis what Allah‒Blessed be He and raised far above‒ has mentioned in His following Words:… and We have carried them on land and sea …[Al-Israa’: 70].Allah hascarried them on land on the backs of animals, such as camels, mules, donkeys and land vehicles, and onsea on board ships and boats.

Another form of honouring the Children of Adam is imparted by the verse… and have provided them with At-Taiyibât (lawful good things) …[Al-Israa’: 70].This indicates that Allah has exclusively privileged them with food, beverages, attires, and spouses such that all their needs are catered for and granted to them by Almighty Allah Who made all things quite attainable and permissible for them rather than forbidden. Nay, Allah has denounced those hard-liners who obstinately forbid the lawful good things He has bestowed upon mankind:

Say (O Muhammad SAW): "Who has forbidden the adoration with clothes given by Allâh, which He has produced for his slaves, and At-Taiyibât [all kinds of Halâl (lawful) things] of food?"[Al-A’raf: 32]

In other words, the verse comes in the form of a question: “Who dare forbid the graces which Allah has bestowed upon His servants, and who dare restrict that which Allah has made plentiful?”

Another aspect of the honour accorded to mankindis what Allah ‒May He be exalted‒ has mentioned in His following words:… and have preferred them above many of those whom We have created with a marked preference.He distinguished them with out standing traitsand favoured themwith merits that are not found inthe other kinds of creatures.

O servants of Allah!
This honour which Allah has bestowedupon the Children of Adamdeserves thanking the Benefactor –May He be exalted! The bounties that we enjoy must not shut us off from worshipping our Lord. On the contrary, we must receive them with thanks and appreciation, and we must beware of denying them or using them to commit acts of disobedience.
Getting accustomed to Allah’s graces for a long time may cause one to forget the provisions one has been enjoying and to remember them only when deprivedfrom them. Only then willonerecognise the value of whatone had beenenjoying and the worththe favours onehad lost.

O Muslims!
Muhammad’s Ummahis distinguished with a specialhonourabove the general honouring whichalltheChildrenofAdamshare.

It was narrated byBahzibn Hakim, on the authority of his father, that his grandfather said: “I heard the Messenger of Allah say: ‘You complete seventy nations, of which you are the best and dearest to Allah ‒to Whom belong Might and Majesty!’” [Narrated by Imam Ahmad]

The hadith means that “You –the Muhammadan Ummah– complete seventy ummahs that preceded you andwhich no one but Allah knows.”

His saying “You” refers to the honourable Companions and those who follow their path or it may refer to the entireUmmah. For, they are the cream of the Muslim Ummah and the most honourableand highest in rank to Allah. This honouring manifests it self in their deeds and morals, in their adherence to the Oneness (of Allah), in their sights on the Day of Judgement, and in their ranks in Paradise.

Therefore, praise Allah and thank Him‒O you Muslims‒formaking you amongst the Ummah of Muhammad ‒May Allah’s Salat and Peace be upon him‒ which is the best and the most honour able Ummah to Allah.

I say this and pray Allah to forgive you, me, and all Muslims.

Part Two
Praise be to Allah Who honours whom He wills and humbles whom He wills . I bear witness that there is no deity except Allah alone with no associate. Whomever He honours no one can disgrace and whomever He disgraces no one can honour. I also bear witness that Muhammad is His Servant and Messenger who said: “Humiliation and lowliness befall those who act contrary to myteachings.” O Allah! Send Your Salat and Peace upon Your Servant and Messenger, our Prophet Muhammad, and upon his Family and all of his Companions!

Now then!
Allah ‒to Whom belong Might andMajesty‒ has ordained that the rivalry for precedence amongst people lies in taqwa (fear of Allah).

He ‒Exalted be He‒ said:
Verily, the most honourable of you with Allâh is that (believer) who has At-Taqwa [i.e. one of the Muttaqûn (pious - see V.2:2).[Al-Hujurât: 13]

Therefore, whoever wears the clothing of taqwa  deserves to be better, morehonourable, and higher in rank than the one who does not. Ibn Omar ‒May Allah be pleased with him and his father‒ said that Allah’s Messenger delivered a khutbah on the day of the Conquest of Makkah thus: “O you people! Allah has taken away from you the boasting and arrogance of Jahiliyyah(the pre-Islamic era)and the people’s bragging of their ancestors. People are of two categories: pious, righteous, and honour able with Allah or licentious, miserable, and insignificantto Allah. All the people are the Children of Adam and Allah has created Adam from dust. Allah said: O mankind! We have created you from a male and a female, and made you into nations and tribes, that you may know one another. Verily, the most honourable of you with Allâh is that (believer) who has At-Taqwa [i.e. one of the Muttaqûn (pious - see V.2). Verily, Allâh is All-Knowing, All-Aware.” [The above hadith was narrated by Al-Tirmithy].

With the same chain of narration, Samurah‒May Allah be pleased with him‒ reported the Prophet ‒May Allah’s Salat and Peace be upon him‒ to have said: “Hasab(highregard) is wealth and honour is taqwa (piety).”That is, what makes a person enjoy ahighregard amongst people is wealth, but what makes him honourable to Allah is taqwa.

A Muslim, therefore, must strive hard to keep his human honourwith which Allah has distinguished him.In addition to Allah’s honouringhim, he shouldalso honour himself by observingtaqwa vis-à-vis Allah, which is the divine special honour.

(The Sheikh quotes two lines of poetry that can be paraphrased as follows):

Verily, taqwa is glory andhonour,
While your love of this worldly life is lowness and malady.

A pious servant has no shortcoming
Once he observes taqwa, even if he might be a weaver or a cupper.

If we seek to ascend the ranks of honour and pursue the paths of glory and nobility then we have to observetaqwa vis-à-vis Allah, obey Him, and avoid His prohibitions lest we lose honour and remain disgraced and demeaned:

And whomsoever Allâh disgraces, none can honour him.[Al-Hajj: 18]

(The Sheikh quotes one line of poetry that can be paraphrased as follows):

Yourself you must honour, for if youderideit,
You will never find anyone to honour it.

Remember‒O servants of Allah‒ that committing acts of disobedience, following whims, negligence, and deviation from the Straight Path are incompatible with Allah’s honouring of the Children of Adam and are discordantwith the believer’s honour and dignity.

O servants of Allah!
In order to achieve taqwa a person must set right his heart, for the latter is the locus of taqwa and the first thing that should be attended to.

In an agreed-upon hadith related by Al-Nu’man ibn Bashir ‒May Allah be pleased with him and his father‒ Allah’s Messenger ‒May Allah’s Salat and Peace be upon him‒ said: “Verily, in the body there is a morsel of flesh, if it issound, the whole body will besound, and if it iscorrupt, the whole bodywillbecorrupt. Indeed, it is the heart.”

There are numerous ways of setting right one’s heart. Some of them are: Reading the Qur’an, supplicating Allah frequently, imploring Him for a submissive and repentant heart, giving alms, doing charity and benevolent work, praying frequentlyfor forgiveness, and keeping company to the righteous.

Now, do pray Allah ‒May He have mercy on you‒ to send His Salat and Peace upon the Select Prophet and Chosen Messenger, as your Lord ‒Exalted and Most High be He‒ commanded you to do. He, the Almighty, said the followinggraciousWords:

Allâh sends His Salât (Graces, Honours, Blessings, Mercy) on the Prophet (Muhammad صلى الله عليه وسلم), and also His angels (ask Allâh to bless and forgive him). O you who believe! Send your Salât on (ask Allâh to bless) him (Muhammad صلى الله عليه وسلم), and (you should) greet (salute) him with the Islâmic way of greeting (salutation i.e. As-Salâmu ‘Alaikum). [Al-Ahzab: 56]

O Allah! Send Your Salatand Peace upon Muhammad and upon his Wives and progeny as You did upon the Family of Ibrahim! O Allah! Send Your Blessing upon Muhammad and upon his Wives and progeny as You did upon the Family of Ibrahim, as You are All-Praiseworthy, All-Glorious!

O Allah! Grant glory to Islam and Muslims and let down unbelief and unbelievers! O Allah! Grant victory to Your servants who believe in Your Oneness! Destroy Your enemies, the enemies of religion! O Allah! Make safe and secure this country and all the Muslim countries!

O Allah! Grant victory to whoever supports religion and let down whoever lets down Your believing servants!

O Allah! Grant us safety in our homelands, set right our Imams and rulers, and entrust our government to those who fear You, observe taqwaand pursue Your Satisfaction, O Lord of the Worlds! O Allah! Guide our ruler to do and say whatever You love and accept, O You, the Ever-Living, the Self-Subsisting!

O Allah! Be with our oppressed brothers and sisters who are so defenceless, those who are mujahidin in Your cause, and those stationedonour borders! O Allah! Be their Helper and Supporter! O Allah! Lift theirdistress, relieve them of all forms of grief, oppression, and affliction! O Allah! Cover their shortcomings, reassure them, and send serenity down upon them!

O Allah! Honour us and do not disgrace us!Give us and do not deprive us, favour us and do not favour others over us!Help us and do not help others against us!Guide us and make guidance accessible to us!

The last of our supplications is praise be to Allah, the Lord of the Worlds!
