| Qualitiesof ‘Good Men and Good Women’
Khutbah Topic ============ His Eminence Sheikh Faisal Ghazzawi –May Allah protect him– delivered this Friday khutbah titled “Qualitiesof ‘Good Men and Good Women’ ” in which hespo keab out the qualities of good servants of Allah, men and women, who are among those whom Almighty Allah mentioned in His Book (the Qur’an) and whom His Prophet ‒May Allah’s Salat and Peace be upon him‒ clearly distinguished in hisimmaculateSunnah. Then, the Sheikh urged his congregation to adornthemselves withsuchqualities and to follow the model of the Prophet –May Allah’s Salat and Peace be upon him– in words and deeds.
Part One ======= Praise be to Allah, the Lord of the Worlds! We offer Him profuse, pure and blessed praise as He loves and as it pleases Him. I bear witness that there is no deity except Allah alone with no associate. Praisebe to Him in the Herein and the Hereafter. I also bear witness that Muhammad is His Servant and Messenger who was sent with mercy and guidance. May Allah send His Salat, Peace, and Blessing upon him, his good and pure Family, his Wives, the Mothers of the Believers, his Companions, and all those who follow them in righteousness until Judgement Day!
Nowthen, ======== O servants of Allah! Observe taqwa (fear) of Allah and hold on to your religion until you meet Him.
* O you who believe! Fear Allâh (by doing all that He has ordered and by abstaining from all that He has forbidden) as He should be feared. [Obey Him, be thankful to Him, and remember Him always], and die not except in a state of Islâm (as Muslims) with complete submission to Allâh. [Al Imran: 102]
Brothers and sisters in Islam! ======================== Among a believer’s qualities that displays his reality, and bespeaks his noble lineage and honourable traits is to describe him as a good person. Each one of us likes to be described as such, but would hate to be described as evil. Rather, he would eschew to be among evil people.
As such, what are the qualities of good people? What distinguishes them and how do they live?
O servants of Allah!Hereis a number of religious texts that may answer our questions:In his Musnad, Imam Ahmad narrates that Abdullah ibnOmar –May Allah be pleased with both of them‒ reported the Prophet –May Allah’s Salat and Peace be upon him– to have said: “I swear by the One in Whose Hand is thesoul of Muhammad that the parable of the believer is that of a bee: it feeds on what is pure(nectar), produces what is pure (honey), and when it alights (on flowers), itneither breaksnor spoils anything.”
The Prophet –May Allah’s Salat and Peace be upon him– compares the believer in whom good qualities are instilled inwardly, and the Islamic morals show ostensibly, to the bee that feeds under the commandment of its Creator –May He be exalted: "Then, eat of all fruits," [Al-Nahl: 69]
When the bee produces something, it is good, and whatever gets out of it is good.
* "There comes forth from their bellies, a substance of varying colour wherein is healing for men. Verily, in this is indeed a sign for people who think." [Al-Nahl: 69]
The believer is the same: his deeds are good; his morals are noble, and his actions are righteous.
O Muslims! ========= A good human being is the one who is both pure and purified; who is keen on shedding every blemish and flaw that may affect him or may undermine his belief.Heshould dissociate himself from contracting ignorance and viciousness and from committing shameful acts. On the other hand, he should take pride in knowledge, belief and good deeds and seeks to reform himself so as to attain uprightness and perfection.
Thus, his heart would be pleased by knowing and loving Allah; his tongue by mentioning and praising Him, and his limbs by obeying Him and trying to get closer to Him.
Imam Ahmad and others narrated that Ali –May Allah be pleased with him‒ said: “Ammar ibn Yasser once came to the Prophet –May Allah’s Salat and Peace be upon him– asking for an audience with him. The Prophet said: ‘Let him in. Welcome to the good one and the one endowed with goodness.’” That is to say: ‘the pure and purified.’
O Muslims! ========= A believer is good in all his affairs: his actions and behaviour, movements and travels, when he is living and after his death. If you ask about a believer’s soul, it is a pure soul.
Mu’athibn Abdullah ibnKhubaibnarrated via his father that his uncle said: “We were in a gathering when the Prophet –May Allah’s Salat and Peace be upon him– arrived with his hair wet. Some of us said to him: ‘We see that you are happy today.’ ‘Yes, thank Allah,’ he answered. Then the group talked at length about wealth, and he said: ‘Wealthis fine for the pious, but wellbeing is better for the pious than wealth. However, agood soul is a blessing’.” [Narrated by Ibn Majah]
Therefore‒O servants of Allah‒it isablessing for the servant of Allah to be a goodperson.
In his Sahih Book, al-Bukharinarrated via Abu Hurairah –May Allah be pleased with him‒ that the Prophet –May Allah’s Salat and Peace be upon him–said: “When one goes to bed, Satan ties three knots at the back of his neck sealing every knot by saying: ‘You’ll have a long night, so sleep!’When one wakes up, a knot will be untied; if he performs his ablutions, another knot will be untied; and if he performs his prayer, the third knot will be untied. In the morning, he will be active and in good spirits; otherwise, he will be in bad spirits and sluggish.”
IbnHajar –May Allah bless his soul– said: “It seems that night prayer has asecret concerning the goodness of the soul.”
Ibn Abdulbarr –May Allah bless his soul– said: “This censure is addressed to the one who does not wake up for his prayer and has therefore wasted it. As for the one who is wont to rise for his prayer, prescribed or supererogatory, but was overcome by slumber, it is ascertained that Allah will grant him the reward for his prayer, and hissleep will be considered as a charity to himfromAllah.”
O brothers and sisters in Islam! ========================== A believer has a word that he keeps repeating; it does not part with his tongue during his life and at his death.
The word is mentioned in thefollowing verses: ====================================== *"See you not how Allâh sets forth a parable? - A goodly word as a goodly tree, whose root is firmly fixed, and its branches (reach) to the sky (i.e. very high). Giving its fruit at all times, by the Leave of its Lord and Allâh sets forth parables for mangood in order that they may remember." [Ibrahim: 24-25]
This good word is the testimony: La ilahaillaallah (There is no deity except Allah). Therefore, rest assured and be at ease‒O you Muslim‒ with this good word, the word of tawheed (monotheism) and have it ready all the time and remember that he whose last word in the herein is “la ilahaillaallah” will enter Paradise. So,pray your Lord to perseverethereon until death.
Allah, the Almighty, says: ===================== "And they are guided (in this world) unto goodly speech (i.e. Lâilâha ill-Allâh, Alhamdulillâh, recitation of the Qur'ân, etc.) and they are guided to the Path of Him (i.e. Allâh's Religion of Islâmic Monotheism), Who is Worthy of all praises." [Al-Hajj: 24]
Allah has, thus, guided the believer to good speech, the best part of which is the Word of Ikhlaas (thetestimony ofmonotheism), thenanyother good speech in which Allah is remembered or anybeneficence towards Allah’s servants.
Allah –Greatly-laudedbe He– says: ============================ "To Him ascend (all) the goodly words, and the righteous deeds exalt it (the goodly words i.e. the goodly words are not accepted by Allâh unless and until they are followed by good deeds)" [Fatir: 10]
Good speech, such as reciting the Qur’an and glorifying Allah, tahmeed (saying al hamdulillah “Praise be to Allah”) and tahleel (saying la ilahailla Allah “There is no deity except Allah”), and all other good words are raised and turned in to Allah Who commends the uttererof such good words in the presence of the heavenlyhost (the angels).
The believer is keen on spreading salam(greeting the people he meets saying: “Peace be upon you”), which is a blessed greeting from Allah and is described as being ‘good’ because it is among the good words that are dear to Allah. It expresses goodness that manifests itself on the face of its utterer;besides, it brings him the love and veneration of the people he greets.
O servants of Allah! ================ Good men and good women are keen on taking care of their analogues and on what is congruent with their deeds.
Allah, the Almighty, says: ===================== "Good statements are for good people (or good women for good men) and good people for good statements (or good men for good women)" [Al-Noor: 26]
This means that good men, women, words and deeds are suitable to, and compatible with, what is good. They are congruent, associated, and comparable with it. Also, good words are the best and most beautiful of all speech.
Therefore, follow the commandment of your Prophet –May Allah’s Salat and Peace be upon him– as he says: “Feed others, and let your words be good.” [Narrated by al-Tabaranivia Ali –May Allah be pleased with him!]
Remember the good tidings conveyed by the truthful and the most trusted (the Prophet –May Allah’s Salat and Peace be upon him–) as he says: “Indeed, in Paradise there are chambers whose outside can be seen from their inside and whose inside can be seen from their outside." A Bedouin stood up and said: 'Who are they for, O Messenger of Allah?"He said:“They are for those who speak using good words, give food in charity, fast regularly, and prayat night while people are asleep.” [Narrated by al-Termithyvia Ali –May Allah be pleased with him!]
The believer takes every care that his earning is tayyib (good and lawful). In his Sahih Book, Imam Muslim narrates that Abu Hurairah ‒May Allah be pleased with him‒ reported the Prophet –May Allah’s Salat and Peace be upon him– to have said: “O people! Allah is good and accepts nothing but good.Indeed,Allah ordered the believers as He did His messengers, saying: ‘"O (you) Messengers! Eat of the Taiyibât [all goods of Halâl (legal) foods which Allâh has made legal (meat of slaughtered eatable animals, milk products, fats, vegetables, fruits, etc.], and do righteous deeds. Verily! I am Well-Acquainted with what you do."’ [Al-Mu’minoon: 51], and said: ‘"O you who believe (in the Oneness of Allâh - Islâmic Monotheism)! Eat of the lawful things that We have provided you with, and be grateful to Allâh, if it is indeed He Whom you worship."’” [Al-Baqarah: 172]
Then, hetalked about [the case] of “A man who, having journeyed far, is dishevelled and dusty, and who spreads out his hands to the sky saying:‘O Lord! O Lord!,’ while his food is haram (unlawful), his drink is haram, his clothing is haram, and he has been nourished with haram, so how can [his supplication] be answered?!”
Al-Qurtubi –May Allah bless his soul– said: “Allah, the Almighty, has equated prophets with believers in discourse, by making it incumbent on them to eat what is halal (lawful or permissible) and to forsake what is haram. He then included all in the threat implied in HisWords" Verily! I am Well-Acquainted with what you do." ” [Al-Mu’minoon: 51]
May Allah send His Salat upon His messengers and prophets! If this is the case with them, what do ordinary people think of themselves?
The believer is also keen on giving charity from his good (halal) earnings, in pursuance of Almighty Allah’s Words:
"O you who believe! Spend of the good things which you have (legally) earned, and of that which We have produced from the earth for you, and do not aim at that which is bad to spend from it, (though) you would not accept it save if you close your eyes and tolerate therein. And know that Allâh is Rich (Free of all wants), and Worthy of all praise." [Al-Baqarah: 267]
Allah –May He be exalted– commanded that His servants spend from their good(halal) earnings and avoid what is evil(haram). How great the reward is of the one who gives charity from good (halal) earnings no matter how small it might be.
Abu Hurairah ‒May Allah be pleased with him‒ narrated that Allah’s Messenger ‒May Allah’s Salat and Peace be upon him‒ said: “Whenever a person gives charity from what is good ‒and Allah does not accept but what is good (halal)‒ the Merciful takes it by His right Hand even if it were a date. It starts growing in the Hand of the Merciful until it becomes larger than a mountain, exactly in thes a me way anyone of you raises his pony or newly-born camel.”[Narrated byImam Muslim]
O brothers and sisters! =================== Among the signs of a good believer is visiting and communicating with his Muslim brothers. In order to achieve this, he approaches beneficence and seeks what is good.
Abu Hurairah ‒May Allah be pleased with him‒ said that the Messenger of Allah ‒May Allah’s Salat and Peace be upon him‒ said: “Whoever calls on a sick person or visits a brother in faith, a caller calls him saying:‘May you lead a good life and may your endeavourbe good! You have thus secured a high position in Paradise.’”[Narrated by al-Tirmidhi]
In explanation of the above hadith, al-Teebi ‒May Allah bless his soul‒ said: “It is a supplication for him to have a good life in the Hereafter, just like‘An tibta’ (أن طبت) is a supplication for him to lead a good life in the Herein.”
O brothers and sisters! =================== Bringing joy into the hearts of Allah’s servants is a sign of good-hearted people. The Prophet ‒May Allah’s Salat and Peace be upon him‒ said about those who pay people back their due rights in fullandmore: “The best among Allah’s servants are those who pay people their due rights in full and more.”[Narrated by al-Tabaranifrom a hadith reported by Abi Humaid Al-Sa’idi]
The shortest way to people’s hearts is a good word.He ‒May Allah’s Salat and Peace be upon him‒ said: “Guard yourselves against Hell-Fire even if it be only with half a date-fruit (given in charity); and if you cannot afford even that, thenwith(saying)a good word.”[Narrated by al-Bukhari from a hadith reported by Udey ibn Hatim ‒May Allah be pleased with him!]
A believer ‒O servants of Allah‒ also seeks to look good; thus, he wears white clothes, following the hadith of the Prophet ‒May Allah’s Salat and Peace be upon him: “Wear white clothes, for they are purer and better, and alsoshroud your dead in white.” [Narrated by al-Nassa’i from a hadith reported by Sumrah ibn Jundob ‒May Allah be pleased by him!]
His use of the word “Atyab” (better) is because it rather means humility, humbleness, and the absence of pride and self-conceit.That is why the‘better-ness’ of white clothes is preferred in gatherings, such as attending the Friday prayer and going to the mosque; that is why white clothes are preferred as shrouds, as the Prophet ‒May Allah’s Salat and Peace be upon him‒ said: “... and shroud your dead in white.”
A Muslim also takes care of his body purity: He takes care of his mouth’s cleanliness; he purifies and perfumes it by the Siwak as mentioned in the following hadith: “The Siwak is a purifier of the mouth, and a reason of the Lord’s contentment. ”[Narrated by al-Nassa’ie from a hadith reported by Aisha ‒May Allah be pleased with her!]
The Siwak purifies the mouth which is the location of the remembrance of Allahand the confidential talk to Him.A Muslim also perfumes his body in emulation of his Prophet ‒May Allah’s Salat and Peace be upon him!
Anas ibn Malik ‒May Allah be pleased with him‒ said: “Allah’s Messenger ‒May Allah’s Salat and Peace be upon him‒ used to have a sukkah from which he perfumed himself.” The meaning of Sukkah is a mixture of perfume lotions, or it could mean a container of perfume. Thus ‒O brothers and sisters in Allah‒ good people lead alife of purity, chastity, and cleanness.
I supplicate Allah to make us all among good people and among those whom Allahendowedwith a good life. Having said what you have just heard,Ipray Allah to forgiveyou and me.

| Part Two: ======== Praise be to Allah, the Lord of the Worlds, Who endowed with good life those whoobey Him and seek His contentment. May Allah’s Salat and Peace be upon His Servant and SelectProphet, the Imam of the righteous and good, and the most honorable of all creatures! I bear witness that there is no deity except Allah alone with no associate, and I also bear witness that Muhammad is His Servant and Messenger. May Allah’s Salat and Peace be upon him, his Family, and all his Companions!
Now then! ======== A believer leads a happy and stable worldly life because of his heart-feltcomfort, calmness, and cheerfulness. He leads a good life, and this is what Allah has promised His believing servants in His clear Book:
"Whoever works righteousness, whether male or female, while he (or she) is a true believer (of Islâmic Monotheism) verily, to him We will give a good life (in this world with respect, contentment and lawful provision)" [Al-Nahl: 97]
After havingled a good life, the believing servant dies good and pure.
Allah, the Almighty, said: ==================== "Those whose lives the angels take while they are in a pious state (i.e. pure from all evil, and worshipping none but Allâh Alone) saying (to them): Salâmun 'Alaikum (peace be on you) enter you Paradise, because of (the good) which you used to do (in the world)." [Al-Nahl: 32]
“Pious state”(in the above verse) means pure and untainted withassociating partners with Allah, pious and pure in word and deed, their death is good and easy without woe or pain, relieved of hardship and death torment. The angels say to them “Peace be upon you” in order to reassure them and bid them welcome: “"enter you Paradise, because of (the good) which you used to do (in the world)" ”thus hastening onbringing them glad tidings.
Thishow good believing souls are; they are given glad tidings at the moment of death while departing their bodies in a state of purity and are called upon (by angels).
Ibn Majah narrated from a hadith reported by Abu Hurairah ‒May Allah be pleased with him‒ that Allah’s Messenger ‒May Allah’s Salat and Peace be upon him‒ said: “When a person is about to die, the angels come. If the man was righteous the Death Angel says: ‘Come out O pure soul!’ It was in a good body. ‘Come out benignly and rejoice at the rest and bounty awaiting youand a Lord Who is pleased.’ The soul continues to be toldthese wordsuntil it gets out. Then, it will be taken up to heaven and the doors(of heaven)willbe asked to be opened for it. It will then besaid: ‘Who is this?’ The answercomes: ‘So and so.’A voice is heard saying: ‘Welcome to the good soul that was in the good body, come in benignly and rejoice at the rest and bounty awaiting you and a Lord Who is pleased.’The soul continues to be told these words until itreaches the heaven where Allah ‒Blessed be He and raised far above‒is.”
What a beautifuloutcome and a good fruit! We ask Allah to grant us of His bounties. Then, on the Day of Judgement and at the gates of Paradise, they are told: "“Salâmun 'Alaikum (peace be upon you)! You have done well, so enter here to abide therein," [Al-Zumar: 73]. They will find therein eternal blessing.
Allah, the Almighty, said: ==================== "Those who believe (in the Oneness of Allâh - Islâmic Monotheism), and work righteousness, Tûbâ(it means all kinds of happiness or name of a tree in Paradise) is for them and a beautiful place of (final) return." [Al-Ra’d: 29]
It is said that “Tûbâ” (in the verse above) is the name of a tree in Paradise. It is also said that the word refers to everything desired in Paradise, such as eternal existence, lasting glory, and affluence without poverty.
Allahu Akbar(Allah is Greatest)! I swear by the Lord of the Ka’bah that they have succeeded! They will have of the graces He has;this generous Lord!
The Almighty said: =============== "Allâh has promised to the believers -men and women, - Gardens under which rivers flow to dwell therein forever, and beautiful mansions in Gardens of 'Adn(EdenParadise). But the greatest bliss is the Good Pleasure of Allâh. That is the supreme success." [Al-Tauba: 72]
Think about His Words“beautiful mansions.”They are beautiful to look at, beautiful to stay in, for they have all the characteristics of lofty mansions that no one could ever wish to have better.
O brothers and sisters! =================== At the lead of those good, pure, purified and virtuousMuslims is their Imam, role model and Master, the most honorable of all creatures, the Seal of the Prophets and Messengers, Muhammad ‒May Allah’s Salat and Peace be upon him!May my father and mother be sacrificed for his sake! When he died, Abu Bakr ‒May Allah be pleased with him‒came alongand lifted the cover off his face, kissed him and said:“May my father and mother be sacrificed for your sake! You were good and pure alive and also good and pure dead. I swear by the One in Whose Hand is my soul that Allah will never let you tastethe two deaths .”[Narrated by al-Bukhari from a hadith reported by Aisha ‒May Allah be pleased with her!]
Ali ‒May Allah be pleased with him‒ said that when he was doing the ritual washing of the Prophet’s corpse ‒May Allah’s Salat and Peace be upon him‒ he was expecting to find what is usually found of a dead body (i.e. excretions), but did not find any.So he said: “May my good father be sacrificed for your sake! You were good and pure alive and good and pure when dead.” [Narrated by Ibn Majah]
He is Abu al-Qasim (the father of al-Qasim), Abu Abdullah (the father of Abdullah), the pure, the good, who had a good soul, good tongue, good deeds, good traits, and whose honorable and pure soul has departed to its Creator after he had lived a good and pure life that is not usually enjoyed except by Allah’s righteous believers.
Therefore, follow his footsteps, implement his Sunnah, hold tight to his Sharia, and lead a pure and purified life so that you may be successful.Do obey Allah’s order and supplicate Him to send His Salat and Peace upon your Prophet on this day in particular and on all your days in general:
O you who believe! Send your Salât on (ask Allâh to bless) him (Muhammad صلى الله عليه وسلم), and (you should) greet (salute) him with the Islâmic way of greeting (salutation i.e. As-Salâmu ‘Alaikum.[Al-Ahzab: 56]
O Allah! Send Your Salat, Peace and Blessing upon Muhammad and the Family of Muhammad as You have sent Your Salat, Peace and Blessing upon Ibrahim (Abraham) and the Family of Ibrahim, You are the Laudable, the Glorious! O Allah! Bless Muhammad and the Family of Muhammad as You have blessed Ibrahim and the Family of Ibrahim in the Worlds, You are the Laudable, the Glorious!
O Allah! Grant glory to Islam and Muslims and humiliate infidelity and infidels!O Allah! Grant glory to Your religion, Your Book and the Sunnah of Your Prophet, and Your pious servants!
O Allah! Grant victory to our Muslim brothers and sisters everywhere! O Allah! Be for them a helper and a supporter!
O Allah! Grant us safety in our homelands and set right our imams and leaders! O Allah! Entrust our leadership to those who fear You and are righteous, and whose deeds are intended to gain Your contentment, O Lord of the Worlds! O Allah! Guide our leader to do what You like and accept, and lead him to righteousness and piety!
O Allah! Grant victory to our brothers and sisters who are oppressed and to the Mujahideen in Your cause and to those who are stationed at inlets and on the borders! O Allah! Strengthen their resolve, grant them firmness and steadfastness and unite them! O Allah! Let down their enemies and bring utter defeat upon them!
O Allah! Protect Al-Aqsa Mosque and liberate it from the oppression of the oppressors!
O Allah! Whoever intends to do harm or evil against Islam, Muslims, their religion, and sacred sites, O Allah, let their cunning return against them, and do strike them with Your sturdiness, O You,the Most Strong, the Mighty!
O Allah! Save our oppressed brothers and sisters everywhere, in Palestine, Syria, Iraq, Yemen, Burma, and everywhere! O Allah! Set right their conditions and destroy their enemies, O You, the Most Strong, the Mighty!
O Allah! We pray You to give us all kinds of good and to help us abandon all kinds of wrong! O Allah! We pray You to grant us a good happy life that is full of content! O Allah! We seek refuge with You from calamities both apparent and hidden!
Finally, the last of our supplications is praise be to Allah, the Lord of the Worlds! -------------------------------------------------- http://www.alharamain.gov.sa/index.cfm
