| Surah As-Saffat
(The Devotional Ranks)
Chapter 37
It is 182 Verses 5 Units (Ruku’): Revealed at Makkah
In the Name of Allah, the Most Compassionate, the Most Merciful
1. I (Allah) swear by those (Angels) who line themselves up in ranks (for
My worship).
2. Then by those (Angels) who drive (the clouds to water the dry lands),
3. Then by those (Angels) who recite the Message (of Allah).
4. Most surely your (real) God is only One (i.e., Allah):
5. The Lord of the heavens and the earth and what is between them, and Lord of the sun’s risings (and settings).
6. Surely We (Allah) have adorned the nearest sky with an adornment of stars,
7. And to safeguard against every rebellious devil.
8. They cannot listen to the exalted assembly, and they are pelted from
every side,
9. Being driven off, and for them is a constant torment,
10. Except him who snatches (some words) by stealing, then there follows him a brightly piercing flame.
11. Then ask them (those who deny the Truth) whether they are stronger in creation or those (others) whom We have created. Surely We created them (mankind) of sticky clay.
12. But you wonder (at their arrogance) while they mock (at you and the Qur’an),
13. And when they are reminded, they pay no attention,
14. And when they see a Sign, they encourage one another to mock at it,
15. And they say: This is nothing but clear magic:
16. When we are dead and have become dust and bones, shall we then certainly be raised up (from the dead)?
17. And also our fathers of old?
18. Say: Yes! And you shall then be humiliated.
19. So it will only be a single shout, then at once they will be staring.
20. And they will say: Oh woe to us! This is the Day of Recompense.
21. (They will be told): This is the Day of Judgment which you used to deny.
22. (The Angels will be ordered): Gather together those who worked iniquity (the disbelivers and polytheists) and their associates, and what they used to worship,
23. Instead of Allah, then lead them to the way of Hell.
24. And stop them, for they will be questioned:
25. What is the matter with you (O disbelievers and polytheists) that (now) you cannot help each other? |

| 26. But on that Day they will surrender.
27. And some of them will turn toward others, questioning each other.
28. They will say: Surely you used to come to us from the right.
29. They will say: Rather, you (yourselves) were not believers;
30. And we had no authority over you, but you were a transgressing people;
31. So the Word (Decree) of (Allah) our (True) Lord has been justified against us, that we shall certainly taste (the Torment);
32. So we led you astray, for we ourselves were astray.
33. So on that Day, they will (all) share in the Torment.
34. Surely thus do We deal with the unbelievers.
35. Surely they used to behave arrogantly when it was said to them: ‘There is no god (worthy of worship) except Allah;’
36. And say: Shall we indeed give up our gods for a mad poet?
37. Rather, he (the Prophet Muhammad) has come with the Truth and he confirms the (previous) Messengers (of Allah).
38. Most surely you will taste the painful Torment.
39. And you shall not be recompensed except (for) what you used to do.
40. But not the sincere (and devoted) servants of Allah.
41. For them there will be a known provision (in Paradise),
42. Fruits, and they will be highly honored,
43. In Gardens of Pleasure,
44. On thrones (of dignity), facing each other (in happiness).
45. A cup (of pure wine) will be passed round among them from a clear flowing spring.
46. White, delicious to those who drink.
47. There will be no headache therein, nor will they be intoxicated from it.
48. And with them will be women who restrain their glances, with large, beautiful, alluring eyes;
49. As if they were hidden (ostrich) eggs, well-preserved.
50. Then they will turn to one another, mutually questioning each other. |

| 51. A speaker from among them will say: Surely I had a companion,
52. Who used to say: Are you indeed of those who believe (in the Resurrection after death)?
53. When we are dead and have become dust and bones, shall we then indeed be brought to Judgment?
54. He will say: Will you look on?
55. Then he looks down and sees him in the midst of Hell.
56. He will say: By Allah! You almost caused me to perish;
57. And had it not been for the Favor of (Allah) my Lord, I would certainly have been among those brought forth (to Hell).
58. Is it then that we are not going to die,
59. Except our previous death? And we shall not be chastised?
60. Most truly! This is the Great Achievement.
61. Then for the like of this, let those strive, who choose to strive.
62. Is this better as a welcome or the tree of Zaqqum?
63. Surely We have made it to be a trial for the workers of iniquity (the evildoers).
64. Surely it is a tree that grows in the bottom of Hell;
65. Its fruits are as if they were the heads of devils.
66. Then most surely they will eat of it and fill (their) bellies therewith.
67. Then most surely they will have to drink a mixture prepared of scalding water.
68. Then most surely their return will be to Hell.
69. Surely they found their fathers going astray,
70. So in their footsteps they are being hastened on.
71. And certainly most of the ancients went astray before them,
72. And certainly We sent among them warners.
73. Then see how was the end of those who were warned,
74. Except the sincere (and devoted) servants of Allah.
75. And Noah did certainly call upon God (Allah), and how Excellent are We at responding (to prayer). |

| 76. And We (Allah) saved him and his family from the great distress (the denial of his people and the great flood).
77. And We made his offspring the survivors.
78. And We left for him (a goodly remembrance) among the later generations.
79. Peace be upon Noah among the worlds.
80. Thus do We surely reward the doers of good.
81. Surely he was of Our believing servants.
82. Then We drowned the others.
83. And most surely among those who followed his Way was Abraham.
84. When he came to his Lord (Allah) with a sound heart,
85. (And) when he said to his father and his people: What is it that you worship?
86. Is it falsehood - gods other than Allah - that you desire?
87. What is then your thought about (Allah) the (real) Lord (Creator, Sustainer, and Ruler) of all that exists (of mankind, jinn, angels, etc.)?
88. Then he looked at the stars, looking up once,
89. Then he said: Surely I am (going to be) sick.
90. So they went away from him, turning back.
91. Then he turned aside to their gods and said: Will you not eat (of the offerings before you)?
92. What is the matter with you that you do not speak?
93. Then he turned against them (in seclusion), striking them with (his) right hand.
94. So they (the idol worshippers) advanced toward him, hastening.
95. (Abraham) said: Do you worship what you carve out?
96. While Allah has created you and what you make.
97. They said: Build for him a furnace, then cast him into the burning fire.
98. And they sought a plot against him but We made them the ones most humiliated.
99. And (Abraham) said: Surely I am going to (Allah) my Lord; He will guide me.
100. (O Allah) my Lord! Grant me (a son) of the righteous. |

| 101. So We gave him the good news of a forbearing boy.
102. And when he reached (the age) of working with him, he said: O my son! Surely I have seen in a dream that I should sacrifice you; look then, what would be your view. (Ishmael) said: O my father! Do what you are
commanded; if Allah wills, you will find me of those who are patient.
103. So when they both (Abraham and Ishmael) submitted (to the Command of Allah), and he put him down upon his forehead,
104. We called to him (saying): O Abraham!
105. You have indeed fulfilled the vision; surely thus do We reward the doers of good.
106. Most surely this was a manifest trial.
107. And We ransomed him (Ishmael) with a great sacrifice (a ram).
108. And We left for Abraham (a goodly remembrance) among the later generations.
109. Peace be upon Abraham.
110. Thus do We reward the good doers.
111. Surely he (Abraham) was one of Our believing servants.
112. And (in time) We gave him the good news of Isaac, a Prophet from among the righteous.
113. And We bestowed Our blessings upon him and upon Isaac; and of their offspring is the doer of good, and (also) the clearly unjust to himself.
114. And certainly We (Allah) conferred a Favor on Moses and Harun (Aaron).
115. And We saved them both and their people from the great distress (from their persecution by Pharoah).
116. And We helped them, so it was they who achieved victory.
117. And We gave them both the Scripture (Torah) that made (things) clear.
118. And We guided them both to the right Way.
119. And We left for them (a goodly remembrance) among the later generations.
120. Peace be upon Moses and Harun (Aaron).
121. Surely, thus do We reward the doers of good.
122. Indeed, they were both of Our believing servants.
123. And Ilyas (Elijah) was most surely of the Messengers (of Allah).
124. When he said to his people: Do you not guard against evil?
125. Do you call upon Ba’al (an idol), and forsake the Best of creators, |

| 126. Allah (alone, is) your (True) Lord (Creator, Sustainer, and Ruler) and the Lord of your forefathers?
127. But they denied him, therefore they will most surely be brought forth (to Hell).
128. Except the sincere and chosen servants of Allah.
129. And We left for him (a good remembrance) among the later generations.
130. Peace be upon Ilyas (Elijah).
131. Indeed, We thus reward the doers of good.
132. Surely he was one of Our believing servants.
133. And Lot was most surely of the Messengers (of Allah).
134. (So mention) when We (Allah) saved him and his family, all;
135. Except (his wife) an old woman (who was) among those who stayed behind (and perished).
136. Then We destroyed the others.
137. And most surely you pass by them in the morning,
138. And at night; do you not then understand?
139. And Yunus (Jonah) was most surely of the Messengers (of Allah).
140. (Mention) when he ran away to a ship completely laden,
141. And then drew lots, but he was the one who lost.
142. So the fish swallowed him while he was blameworthy.
143. And had he not been of those who exalt and glorify (Allah),
144. He would certainly have remained in its belly to the Day when they are raised up (from the dead).
145. Then We cast him on a desert shore while he was sick.
146. And We (Allah) caused to grow up for him a gourd (squash) vine.
147. And We sent him to a hundred thousand, or more.
148. And they believed, so We gave them provision til a time.
149. Then ask them does (Allah) your Lord have daughters (as they claim), while they have sons?
150. Or did We create the Angels females (as they say) while they were witnesses? |

| 151. For surely it is of their own lie that they say:
152. Allah has begotten children; and most surely they are liars.
153. Has He then chosen daughters rather than sons?
154. What is the matter with you, how is it that you judge?
155. Will you not then remember?
156. Or have you a clear authority?
157. Then bring your scripture, if you are truthful.
158. And they assert a kinship between Him (Allah) and the jinn; and certainly the jinn do know that they (who make such a claim) will surely be brought forth (to the Punishment of Hell);
159. Glory (and Honor) be to Allah, (He is free) from what they attribute to Him (of their polytheistic beliefs);
160. Except the sincere and devoted servants of Allah (who do not share in that sin).
161. So surely you and what you worship,
162. Cannot tempt (any) away from Him,
163. Except him who is to burn in Hell.
164. And there is none of us (Angels) but has an assigned place,
165. And most surely we (Angels) too are lined up in ranks (before Allah in worship),
166. And most surely we (Angels) too declare the Glory (and Honor of Allah).
167. And surely they (the pagan Arabs) used to say:
168. If we had a Reminder (Scripture) as those of old.
169. We would certainly have been the servants of Allah - sincere (and devotedto Him).
170. But (now) they disbelieve in it, so they will come to know.
171. And certainly Our Word (Decree) has already preceded for Our servants, the Messengers (of Allah).
172. Most surely they will be the assisted ones,
173. And most surely Our soldiers (the believers) will be the victorious.
174. Therefore turn away from them (the disbelievers) til a time,
175. And (then) see them, so they too will see. |

| 176. Would they then hasten on Our Chastisement?
177. But when it will descend in their courtyard, evil will then be the morning of the warned ones.
178. And turn away from them til a time.
179. And (then) see, for they too will see.
180. Glory (and Honor) be to (Allah) your Lord, the Lord of Might, above what they attribute to Him (of polytheistic beliefs).
181. And peace be upon the Messengers (of Allah).
182. And all Praise is due to Allah, the (real) Lord (Creator, Sustainer, and Ruler) of all that exists (of mankind, jinn, angels, etc.). |
